Art at 10C: Natural Curation
November 4 – 30
Reception is being held on November 9 1-3pm at 10C – Come chat with the artists!
Andrea and Abby’s collaboration thrives in the moments of curation—the magical reveal of their combined works, each print resonating with the other yet maintaining its individuality. When their works come together, connections emerge naturally: forms chosen from the environment, a harmony of colors, or the balance of compositions that seem to speak to each other. Each curation brings surprises and discoveries, a new way to see the common threads in their processes. Andrea gathers pine cones and leaves from her walks, and Abby captures scenes from her everyday surroundings in photographs. Together, their distinct practices intertwine seamlessly.
Both artists find a sense of calm in returning to familiar subjects, embracing the beauty of repetition. The natural world offers an endless source of inspiration, where subtle patterns and symmetry reward careful attention. Spending time with each subject unveils its essence, helping both artists capture the qualities that make each form unique. Abby’s botanical monoprints reveal this attention to detail, exploring positive and negative space in textures that ebb and flow, with botanicals dancing in the foreground or fading into the background. Andrea’s pieces celebrate the whimsy she finds in ordinary natural elements collected along the sidewalk, infusing her bold forms with playfulness.
For this exhibition, their work reflects a shared fascination with small leaves and ferns, harmonizing their different techniques as seasons change. While previous shows have involved layering one another’s work to explore new interactions of form, process, and material, this show emphasizes the unity in their solo pieces. Each piece echoes their layered collaborative process, anticipating their transition into solo exhibitions in the coming year.
Abby Lichti is an interdisciplinary artist, based in the Region of Waterloo. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Psychology through the University of Guelph. Her work and process often includes printmaking, drawing, and photographic references, with a soft spot for textiles. She finds inspiration in private everyday life encounters, through nature, domesticity, and photographic references intuitively captured throughout her day, that translate to collective human emotions and experiences.
Andrea McCallum is a Guelph based artist working in printmaking, sculpture and digital media. Creating work through processes in sculpture and printmaking, Andrea enters the space between the natural and metaphysical in the everyday. Rather than reference images, she captures the essence of elements of nature from her daily walks directly onto lino blocks. Her healing and artistic practices overlap for some projects, allowing experiences of the subtle senses a physical embodiment. Connecting with the energy of nature, people, and places adds an emotional layer to her prints.
