Meet Mikaela Lewis (she/her), the founder of Remix Swing, and a new 10C member!
Mikaela founded Remix Swing in Waterloo in 2022 with the goal of bringing modern social dance classes and events to the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Since then, Remix Swing has grown from offering one class a week to class every night in multiple dance styles in their studio space Uptown Waterloo, and now in Guelph as well!
Mikaela’s journey to becoming a 10C member began while searching for a new studio space. Despite leading classes in Guelph for the past 4 years, this will be the first time Remix Swing operates under its own name in the City. Building on the success of Remix Swing and the growth of the West Coast Swing community in Waterloo, Mikaela is now the proud Event Director of the Waterloo Ontario Open West Coast Swing Championships, KW’s first international West Coast Swing convention, bringing world-class professionals right to our doorstep every February.
Mikaela says “Our vision is to create a safe, beginner-friendly environment where everyone can learn to dance at their own pace!” She sees dance as a powerful way to connect people, filling a gap that she feels is often missing in today’s society. Remix Swing was founded on principles of inclusivity and safety, helping foster a strong sense of community. Through dance, participants support one another through breakups, loss, job transitions, and many other stages of life, creating a space where people can come together and connect.
Currently, Remix Swing hosts drop-in beginner classes in Line Dance, and come September, they will be hosting 5-week blocks of beginner West Coast Swing at 10C on the 4th floor! Be sure to check out their website for more information on upcoming classes in Guelph and KW.
Mikaela and the Remix Swing team are thrilled to become a member at 10C and look forward to building relationships with other community dance organizations while continuing to create safe, welcoming, and community-driven spaces for dance.
