Love Your Market

Starting with the very doors through which most people access the Guelph Farmers’ Market, renovations in 2023 will include creating an accessible entrance at Wilson Street with power-assisted double doors. From young families with strollers to citizens requiring mobility assistance, this investment will ensure that those who wish to attend events can do so with peace of mind, knowing that they won’t have to sacrifice comfort and independence to participate in community.
Space will also be improved outdoors to allow for people to gather in comfort for markets, events and gatherings in warmer seasons; further integrating the magic of the market into the fabric of downtown.
The improvements to the Guelph Farmers’ Market will open up one of the most underused spaces in the city. Possible activities include – multi-cultural food events, food skills development and training programs, cooking classes, as well as opportunities to learn more about plant-based diets. From friends gathering at the market café to small food skills classes to weddings and trade shows, the updated building will offer a uniquely historic stage for gatherings of all shapes and sizes.
The Guelph Farmers’ Market is all about food, and as such the renovations will include the installation of a new shared community commercial kitchen. This upgrade allow some market vendors to prepare food onsite, and will provide much needed space for the community and organizations to strengthen opportunities for training and the incubation of new food-focussed activities and services.
The goals are to enhance the market as a key local and regional gathering place and tourism destination. This will be achieved through building improvements, adding a commercial kitchen and promotional infrastructure to increase local food activities and special events.
